Rust Livestock: Cows and Sheep Add Resources, With Trade Prices Based on Genes

October’s update adds milk, wool and animal sales. Biofuel, Powergrid loot rooms and the Air Wolf landing pad change other workflows.

Facepunch released Rust’s Livestock update on October 1. Cows and sheep can be kept and bred. Both produce dung, cows also milk and sheep wool; slaughtered animals yield meat and leather among other resources.

Like plants, animals have needs and genes. Facepunch warns against transferring familiar plant-genetics tricks unchanged: the system does not behave identically. An optimal breeding route needs more evidence than the animals’ introduction alone.

Sales, Milk and New Base Supply

A new trader at the Stables buys adult animals, with offers depending on gene quality. After the first offer, you can refuse twice more; the trader then will not buy that animal for fifteen minutes. Wool offers depend on submitted quantity, up to 400 per trade.

Milk can be consumed directly. After four hours in a refrigerator, it can be skimmed into Skimmed Milk and Cream. Milk generally extends relevant tea effects, while Cream strengthens them. New recipes also use these resources.

The Biofuel Generator converts organic material into Low Grade. It needs manual stirring roughly every thirty minutes; IO can signal the need. An automatic warning therefore does not replace the manual step.

Changes Beyond Animal Husbandry

New Powergrid loot rooms open depending on Heavy Fuses in the Power Plant. At ten or fewer players, fuses last four times as long; durability approaches the normal value towards one hundred players. Small servers therefore have different operating conditions from full ones.

The Air Wolf landing pad starts damaged. The trader sells aircraft there only after collective repairs. Server admins can change behaviour through the stated convars. A specific server route must therefore account for its settings.

Facepunch also mentions navigation and memory optimisations. The studio distributes NPC work across frames and continues observing server load. This does not guarantee large livestock populations are consequence-free on every server.
