Valheim 1.0.17: Iron Gate Reports Fix for Erased World Objects

Splitting a large world save chunk could erase objects in parts of a Valheim world. Iron Gate reports a fix in patch 1.0.17. Earlier terrain problems and lost item levels on stands are separate issues.

What Patch 1.0.17 Changes

Iron Gate reports that Valheim 1.0.17 fixes a rare bug: splitting a large world save chunk file into smaller files could erase objects in parts of a world. The terrain and item problems below concern different bugs.

The patch also addresses invalid item types. Iron Gate says invalid item styles now reset to the default style so the items continue functioning normally. The studio highlights an invalid Shield of Root variant that was available in version 1.0.15 on PlayStation 5. Patch 1.0.17 also updates placeholder text and fixes credits hidden in 1.0.16.

Terrain Problems in 1.0.15 and 1.0.16

The preceding patches addressed different problems. Patch 1.0.15 fixed an issue that could duplicate terrain and reduce performance. Iron Gate said affected worlds might retain visible seams. Deforming terrain along a seam or walking over snow could remove it, and the studio said the correction would persist after reloading.

Patch 1.0.16 fixed cases where terrain modifications in the Deep North reverted after the area was unloaded. Iron Gate said remaining seams might still need attention with a pickaxe or hoe, or by walking over snow. These terrain issues are distinct from the loss of world objects described in 1.0.17.

Lost Item Levels on Stands

Iron Gate attributes levels and variants lost from items on item or armour stands to data lost during conversion to the updated save format introduced in Valheim 1.0. The studio says patch 1.0.12 corrected that conversion issue for worlds converted afterward. For affected items, the announcement describes two backup options.

You can revert the world to the backup made when the new save format was first loaded, but the studio warns that this loses all subsequent world progress and changes. Alternatively, Iron Gate describes opening a copy of the backup, taking affected items onto your character, returning to the main world and replacing the broken items there. These two options concern lost levels and variants of items on stands.

Crossplay During the Rollout

In its October 6 announcement, Iron Gate said internal restrictions meant uploading 1.0.17 to all platforms would take a few days, while crossplay would remain functional during the rollout.
