Valheim: connect Steam and Xbox friends with a join code

Enable crossplay on both sides; a dedicated server uses the PlayFab backend for the mixed group.

Valheim: a character standing at the bow of a sailing boat

Steam and Xbox players can enter the same Valheim world when crossplay is enabled. The host shares a join code, which the others enter under Join Game and Add server. An Xbox can join a dedicated server, but cannot host a dedicated server itself.

Join using the code

  1. The host starts the session or configured server with crossplay enabled.
  2. They open the pause menu, copy the displayed join code and send it to the other players.
  3. The other players open Join Game, choose Add server and paste the code.

If the crossplay option is missing on Xbox, Iron Gate points players to parental control settings. A Steam licence also does not automatically grant access to the Microsoft Store version.

Check the dedicated server’s backend

The -crossplay launch argument selects PlayFab. Without it, the server uses the Steam backend and, according to the manual, only Steam players can see and join it. Check this setting first for a mixed-platform group.

The manual says router port forwarding is not required with the crossplay backend. The port number still distinguishes multiple servers on the same public IP. This does not call for disabling the local firewall; use the linked manual for a complete server setup.
