7 Days to Die 3.3: Distinguish Backpack Slots and Encumbrance

Base inventory has 48 slots and expansion reaches 96. Backpacks add space; Pack Mule and Armor Pocket Mods remove encumbrance.

32 Free Base Slots; 16 Encumbered Base Slots; Backpack: Up to 96 Total; Pack Mule / Pocket Mods

Version 3.3’s new inventory grid has eight columns and six rows. Four rows are freely usable and two are Encumbrance slots. Base inventory therefore has thirty-two unencumbered and sixteen initially encumbered slots.

ComponentFunction
Base grid48 total slots
Backpack in its dedicated slotAdditional Encumbrance slots, up to 96 total
Pack MuleRemoves encumbrance according to the perk
Armor Pocket ModsHelp remove encumbrance
  1. Check your base grid and marked encumbered slots.
  2. Equip a small, medium or large backpack in its dedicated slot.
  3. Compare added slots and free slots separately. A larger backpack does not automatically remove encumbrance from every new slot.
  4. Match Pack Mule and Pocket Mods to your actual loaded equipment.

Every backpack size has six quality tiers. The official overview describes the system but does not provide every combination’s slot count. Use actual item descriptions rather than an invented linear table.

If you cannot consume a Campfire item, the known Stable issue list says to move it into your backpack first. This differs from encumbrance. Historical Experimental branch instructions are also not prerequisites for the released Stable version.
